Gospel – December 3, 2019 – Luke 10:21-24

Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said,
“I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
for although you have hidden these things
from the wise and the learned
you have revealed them to the childlike.
Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.
All things have been handed over to me by my Father.
No one knows who the Son is except the Father,
and who the Father is except the Son
and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.”

Turning to the disciples in private he said,
“Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.
For I say to you,
many prophets and kings desired to see what you see,
but did not see it,
and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.”
“For although you have hidden these things from the wise and learned you have revealed them to the childlike.”

The message here is lost on those who have education. The educated struggle with that which can’t be proven or there is no proof of. That makes Faith a difficult thing.

My dear Uncle Ralph (if you knew him you’d probably wonder about the dear) struggled with the idea of God at all. Well educated he struggled with understanding “God outside of time”. He put humanity’s finite thinking on God. That doesn’t work but I can’t prove it so he continued to struggle with it

But it was always there he just couldn’t set the education aside to focus on Faith. He got it finally. Three days before he passed from pneumonia in the hospital he said, “Well, I guess it won’t be long I’ll be there beside Willy (my aunt, his wife) fussing and fighting.” I told him that’s not what he believed so he wouldn’t be seeing her. That moment of thinking that he wouldn’t see the woman he loved so deeply again broke through his educated mind and made him childlike. Trusting and wanting to know he would see her again.

I feel very strongly they are there – faux fighting and fussing because that was how they loved.

We have to be able to trust him with childlike simplicity. Like a child loves their parents. Trusting they will always be there when we need them. It’s what parents do.

It’s what God the Father does. Just ask Jesus.

At least that’s what I heard Him say…
