Gospel – December 10, 2019 – Matthew 18:12-14
Jesus said to his disciples:
“What is your opinion?
If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray,
will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills
and go in search of the stray?
And if he finds it, amen, I say to you, he rejoices more over it
than over the ninety-nine that did not stray.
In just the same way, it is not the will of your heavenly Father
that one of these little ones be lost.”
We’ve all been there. Things get out of control and we keep thinking the next thing we do will fix it all. But all we do is dig ourselves deeper.
At some point we have to stop digging.
But today we hear Jesus say that God doesn’t care how deep we dig – he is always there to pull us out. “In just the same way, it is not the will of your heavenly Father that one of these little ones be lost.”
But imagine our most vulnerable brothers or sisters. Those who struggle with life in this world? We can all be the “one” but “these little ones” are in most need. Still we, the ninety-nine, will walk by and do nothing to help find them.
But Jesus will.
If you are the “one” just stop digging. Turn to God and call out. He’ll find you.
If you’re the ninety-nine, which I think most here are, start looking for the many “ones” out there unable to realize he’s searching for them.
