Gospel – December 21, 2019 – Luke 1:38-45

Mary set out in those days
and traveled to the hill country in haste
to a town of Judah,
where she entered the house of Zechariah
and greeted Elizabeth.
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting,
the infant leaped in her womb,
and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit,
cried out in a loud voice and said,
“Most blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
And how does this happen to me,
that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears,
the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
Blessed are you who believed
that what was spoken to you by the Lord
would be fulfilled.”

After a very long and difficult journey Mary arrives at the home of Zechariah and Elizabeth. Zechariah is struck dumb for having doubted God’s message.

Yet when Mary greets Elizabeth, Zechariah’s son leaps in his mother’s womb. He recognizes the Lord with no doubts.

Then he goes on to prepare the people as “one crying in the wilderness”. He paved the way for Jesus.

And yet, in the end, in Herod’s prisons, he was his father’s son. He sent his disciples to ask if Jesus was the one. He needed reassurance because he too began to doubt like his father.

But that’s a discussion for another season.

At least that’s what I heard Him say…
