Gospel – December 25, 2019 – Luke 2:15-20

When the angels went away from them to heaven,
the shepherds said to one another,
“Let us go, then, to Bethlehem
to see this thing that has taken place,
which the Lord has made known to us.”
So they went in haste and found Mary and Joseph,
and the infant lying in the manger.
When they saw this,
they made known the message
that had been told them about this child.
All who heard it were amazed
by what had been told them by the shepherds.
And Mary kept all these things,
reflecting on them in her heart.
Then the shepherds returned,
glorifying and praising God
for all they had heard and seen,
just as it had been told to them.

Stop looking to the seats of power, heads of state or rulers of any kind. It isn’t there you find greatness. It’s those who toil in anonymity – putting food on the table, clothes on the backs, shoes on the feet – never seeking recognition just doing. And where do you find them? On the backroads, in the poorer sections of towns, in a stable giving birth to a savior.

My father was a great man – not in the eyes of this world – but in the eyes of many who knew him. Especially his sons and daughters who knew him at his best – and yes – even at his worst.

They say with great power comes great responsibility. Well, sometimes great responsibility comes with very little, if any, power.

Lord, help me to recognize the greatness in little things, quiet places and even in the still, small breeze.

At least that’s what I heard Him say…
