Gospel – January 12, 2020 – Matthew 3:13-17
Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan
to be baptized by him.
John tried to prevent him, saying,
“I need to be baptized by you,
and yet you are coming to me?”
Jesus said to him in reply,
“Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us
to fulfill all righteousness.”
Then he allowed him.
After Jesus was baptized,
he came up from the water and behold,
the heavens were opened for him,
and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon him.
And a voice came from the heavens, saying,
“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
Jesus now knows what’s coming and tells John to baptize him because that is the way it must be for now. When John finally relents and baptizes the one “who is greater is coming” the skies open up and God speaks to Jesus. It was a great event.
But last night at Mass I heard something in the homily that spoke to me like the skies opening up. This is my sharing for today. This is what I heard him say – understood.
Fr Pat said we don’t have to strive to live a holy life – no mistakes. But rather live a life filled with holy moments.
We beat ourselves up because we are broken and fail so often we can eventually think we’re hopeless. So, a seamless holy life with no mistakes we likely won’t achieve.
But a life filled with holy moments – doing good when and where we can – is something we all can achieve.
Remember – Peter was rebuked several times – and he’s the cornerstone. Be Peter – Jesus is on another level – but Peter is achievable.
Live a life of holy moments and you just might find you’ve lived a holy life.
At least that’s what I heard Him say…
