Gospel – January 13, 2020 – Mark 1:14-20
After John had been arrested,
Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the Gospel of God:
“This is the time of fulfillment.
The Kingdom of God is at hand.
Repent, and believe in the Gospel.”
As he passed by the Sea of Galilee,
he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea;
they were fishermen.
Jesus said to them,
“Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Then they left their nets and followed him.
He walked along a little farther
and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John.
They too were in a boat mending their nets.
Then he called them.
So they left their father Zebedee in the boat
along with the hired men and followed him.
Imagine what Jesus must be thinking. His cousin John has been arrested. He has left his home and family – his source of income – all that was familiar. He is in a strange area along the shore and fishermen and boats are everywhere. He was a carpenter.
Talk about leaving your comfort zone. Yet, as he walks along he seems comfortable enough.
He calls Peter – older and married – and his brother Andrew. A short walk later and he calls James and John, the sons of Zebedee. At his call each of them drop what they are doing and just . . . follow him. Did they know him already? Had they heard him preach? What caused them to drop everything and follow this ~33 year old man?
If they had known what would follow – would they have gone? Would you? Or would you be Jonah and try to run from God’s call? Peter just followed Jesus. Jonah ran from God. In the end both were great agents in bringing the salvation to many – Nineveh and Jerusalem.
He’s calling us. We are meant to be disciples. We are meant to carry the good news. How do we feo that?
We choose.
Peter or Jonah.
So, make your choice.
