Gospel – February 18, 2020 – Mark 2:13-17

Jesus went out along the sea.
All the crowd came to him and he taught them.
As he passed by, he saw Levi, son of Alphaeus,
sitting at the customs post.
Jesus said to him, “Follow me.”
And he got up and followed Jesus.
While he was at table in his house,
many tax collectors and sinners sat with Jesus and his disciples;
for there were many who followed him.
Some scribes who were Pharisees saw that Jesus was eating with sinners
and tax collectors and said to his disciples,
“Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
Jesus heard this and said to them,
“Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.
I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”

I have always enjoyed the thought of this Gospel. It’s akin to the MT 7:3 verse “Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?”

It’s Jesus calling the haughty – the self important – to task.

Jesus came for me – a sinner. As hard as I try I continually fall short of the desire for perfection. But I keep trying.

Remember Fr Pat’s exhortation to live a life of holy moments. Perfection is to be striven for but understanding it is difficult to attain.

Revel in those perfect moments which all of us can attain.

At least that’s what I heard Him say…
