Gospel – January 21, 2020 – Mark 2:23-28

As Jesus was passing through a field of grain on the sabbath,
his disciples began to make a path while picking the heads of grain.
At this the Pharisees said to him,
“Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?”
He said to them,
“Have you never read what David did
when he was in need and he and his companions were hungry?
How he went into the house of God when Abiathar was high priest
and ate the bread of offering that only the priests could lawfully eat,
and shared it with his companions?”
Then he said to them,
“The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath.
That is why the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.”

Great example of a child shall lead them. Jesus is new at this preaching, teaching rabbi thing. The Pharisees and scribes have been training for years.

But the Pharisees have been trained in the Law. Jesus has been training in the “people”.

Laws are made to specify right and wrong so everyone knows acceptable responses and how to treat others when there might be some doubt. It makes, or hopes to make the playing field level.

But the Law is written and structured that strict adherence takes compassion out of the equation.

Along comes this young, charismatic preacher to say the Law isn’t always right. With his understanding of the people he understands God better and vice versa.

A child will truly lead them.

At least that’s what I heard Him say…
