Gospel – February 17, 2020 – Mark 8:11-13
The Pharisees came forward and began to argue with Jesus,
seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him.
He sighed from the depth of his spirit and said,
“Why does this generation seek a sign?
Amen, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.”
Then he left them, got into the boat again,
and went off to the other shore.
I know there are times when I’m desperate and ask God for a sign – any sign.
So, you’d think I could relate to the Pharisees today asking Jesus for a sign.
But there is a difference. I seek in my desperation through my weakness. The Pharisees are demanding out of their sense of entitlement.
Jesus may well answer my prayer to sustain my faith – or he may not. Jesus knows me and knows what I need. He also knows my wants. If I need him to do something he will. If I want him to do something he probably won’t.
Today he tells the Pharisees this is no dog and pony show.
At least that’s what I heard Him say…
