Gospel – February 27, 2020 – Luke 9:22-25

Jesus said to his disciples:
“The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected
by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes,
and be killed and on the third day be raised.”

Then he said to all,
“If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself
and take up his cross daily and follow me.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.
What profit is there for one to gain the whole world
yet lose or forfeit himself?”

Great reminder today – Thursday after Lent – why we have this time of reflection and renewal.

We reflect on how we nailed him to the Cross – yes, each of us. Remember, he died for all sins – those committed and those that would be committed. That’s us. We are the hammer. We are the nails.

The World demands so much of us we can lose our way. We lose the path – sometimes we don’t realize it. But Lent – that beautiful season of reflection – provides us time to find that path once again. Yes, we’ll lose it again most likely – we are broken, after all. But Lent comes round again and maybe next Lent we don’t lose our way. We forfeit ourselves and to save our lives we lose it.

Maybe next time we stop listening to the World.

But Lent is a time of renewal. He says he will be killed but then “raised” – renewed.

Sometimes to live we have to die – a little.

At least that’s what I heard Him say…
