Gospel – March 16, 2020 – Luke 4:24-30
Jesus said to the people in the synagogue at Nazareth:
“Amen, I say to you,
no prophet is accepted in his own native place.
Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel
in the days of Elijah
when the sky was closed for three and a half years
and a severe famine spread over the entire land.
It was to none of these that Elijah was sent,
but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon.
Again, there were many lepers in Israel
during the time of Elisha the prophet;
yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”
When the people in the synagogue heard this,
they were all filled with fury.
They rose up, drove him out of the town,
and led him to the brow of the hill
on which their town had been built,
to hurl him down headlong.
But he passed through the midst of them and went away.
What is the lesson in Luke today? What is saying to the Gentiles?
Have you ever had someone you were close to and you knew they were making mistakes? So, you love them and want to help but they hear you but don’t HEAR you. You are too close and they don’t recognize your wisdom be cause you are always there – they know you too well.
This is the dilemma facing Jesus today. He recognizes it and calls them on it. What happens? They get angry. If you tell someone of their shortcomings they don’t like it. But you still need to say it.
I lost another friend and this time to depression. Those close to him knew because he mentioned his thoughts of choosing the course he took. He had a lot going on in his life but no one seems to have taken the time to spend with him. Instead he was left isolated. I wish I had known. Maybe I could have helped. Maybe not.
Something needs to be said but I feel I’d only make them angry. Strange how nothing ever changes.
If our minds are closed to our faults – we reject even God.
At least that’s what I heard Him say…
