Gospel – 4/28/20 – John 6:30-35
The crowd said to Jesus:
“What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you?
What can you do?
Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written:
‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'”
So Jesus said to them,
“Amen, amen, I say to you,
it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven;
my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven
and gives life to the world.”
So they said to Jesus,
“Sir, give us this bread always.”
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life;
whoever comes to me will never hunger,
and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”
When I was very young, I was scared of everything. I was especially apt at creating monsters where they weren’t. I remember once waking especially afraid. It was very dark but I could make out a shape in the dark at the end of my bed. My mind went to work creating this very scary monster. Eventually, I cried out in fear. My mother, the bravest of monster slayers, came to the door and turned on the light, instantly slaying my monster. Amazingly, she turned it into a spare sheet laid over a bed post. She was good. She reassured me it was ok and left and I closed my eyes – the monster slain – until I opened my eyes and he was back.
The people had seen Jesus multiply the loaves and fishes. But now, they want more signs to believe.
With the loaves and fishes he was basically turning on the light so they could see him and what he was. But, they wanted more.
He explains that the manna in the desert was food from God but would not last. But, there was a bread from Heaven (meaning him) that, if they consumed, they would never hunger.
They wanted something they could touch – proof physically- so they didn’t understand.
He can turn on the light and show us – but he can’t force us to understand.
At least that’s what I heard Him say…
