Gospel – 4/29/20 – John 6: 35-40
Jesus said to the crowds,
“I am the bread of life;
whoever comes to me will never hunger,
and whoever believes in me will never thirst.
But I told you that although you have seen me,
you do not believe.
Everything that the Father gives me will come to me,
and I will not reject anyone who comes to me,
because I came down from heaven not to do my own will
but the will of the one who sent me.
And this is the will of the one who sent me,
that I should not lose anything of what he gave me,
but that I should raise it on the last day.
For this is the will of my Father,
that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him
may have eternal life,
and I shall raise him on the last day.”
You can develop an argument here for solo fide (faith alone) is what saves us but then from where does the faith come? It comes from scripture, so the argument for solo scriptura (scripture alone) saves us. But then, what about works (good deeds)?
Martin Luther was a truly amazing man who saw flaws in where the church was and where it was going, so he posted his 95 Theses on the door of his church. Questions he wanted debated in hopes of reforming the Faith.
Instead of debating him the Church excommunicated him and split the faith. He was right. The Church did take a close look at herself and made changes Luther asked for but he remained excommunicated.
The Church is perfect as established by Christ – then we added the human element.
We need to be more than a one trick pony. We need scripture and works but . . .
Gods grace will save us.
