Gospel – 5/19/20 – John 16:5-11

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Now I am going to the one who sent me,
and not one of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’
But because I told you this, grief has filled your hearts.
But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go.
For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you.
But if I go, I will send him to you.
And when he comes he will convict the world
in regard to sin and righteousness and condemnation:
sin, because they do not believe in me;
righteousness, because I am going to the Father
and you will no longer see me;
condemnation, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.”

Wow, that Last Supper was a real doozy. And it’s not over yet. Today, after preparing the disciples (and us) for his death – he says it – he’s leaving us. And the disciples are rightfully grieving.

Jesus, is once again a little surprised. He, more or less, says that he’s given us all this good news – he’s going to the Father, he’s sending us and advocate, we will be together again – and you’re grieving?

So, he assures us that unless he goes, the advocate cannot come. Without the advocate, we will not know the peace of the Father and the Son through the Spirit.

So, buckle up, button your lip and don’t let your shield slip. Great things are about to happen.

At least that’s what I heard Him say…
