Gospel – 6/3/20 – Mark 12:18-27

Some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection,
came to Jesus and put this question to him, saying,
“Teacher, Moses wrote for us,
If someone’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no child,
his brother must take the wife
and raise up descendants for his brother.
Now there were seven brothers.
The first married a woman and died, leaving no descendants.
So the second brother married her and died, leaving no descendants,
and the third likewise.
And the seven left no descendants.
Last of all the woman also died.
At the resurrection when they arise whose wife will she be?
For all seven had been married to her.”
Jesus said to them, “Are you not misled
because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?
When they rise from the dead,
they neither marry nor are given in marriage,
but they are like the angels in heaven.
As for the dead being raised,
have you not read in the Book of Moses,
in the passage about the bush, how God told him,
I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac,
and the God of Jacob?
He is not God of the dead but of the living.
You are greatly misled.”

The Sadducees today are guilty of being trapped in linear thinking. They want Jesus to admit there is no Resurrection. Why? Because they think in finite terms. Why? Because we are finite creatures.

We are created, so we have a beginning in this world. We die, so we have an ending in this world. We understand things like a container. Walls, ceiling, floor, roof and a beginning and an end. It is the physical where we are trapped.

God explained his existence to me in a dream. In my dream, there was a field of brilliant white. There was no beginning or end. There was no floor or ceiling . There was no walls. Nothing but brilliant white light – pure light. When I awoke, I understood that I had met God. That dream was my burning bush.

I experienced that one more time – my sister who had died the year before came into that same exact dream except this time there was Carrie – free of everything we know of the physical – especially of her cancer.

It isn’t easy to let go the physical, but I know what’s next.

Don’t be burdened by the physical. The God of the living isn’t held to the physical.

At least that’s what I heard Him say…
