Gospel – 6/5/20 – Mark 12:35-37
As Jesus was teaching in the temple area he said,
“How do the scribes claim that the Christ is the son of David?
David himself, inspired by the Holy Spirit, said:
The Lord said to my lord,
‘Sit at my right hand
until I place your enemies under your feet.’
David himself calls him ‘lord’;
so how is he his son?”
The great crowd heard this with delight.
The question put forth, “How do the scribes claim that the Christ is the son of David?”
The Jewish people revered King David. They over looked the fact he was a an adulterer turned murderer. So, they (the scribes) tried too hard to elevate David.
Jesus questions that assertion by leading with Psalm 110 – written, by acclimation of the scribes, by David himself – saying David called the Christ, Lord.
In doing so, David says the Messiah is superior to David. How then can the Christ be David’s son?
Jesus was able to teach with questions and questions are much easier to accept – let “me” answer for me – than pronouncements that I am wrong.
At least that’s what I heard Him say…
