Gospel – 7/24/20 – Matthew 13:18-23
Jesus said to his disciples:
“Hear the parable of the sower.
The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the Kingdom
without understanding it,
and the Evil One comes and steals away
what was sown in his heart.
The seed sown on rocky ground
is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy.
But he has no root and lasts only for a time.
When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word,
he immediately falls away.
The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word,
but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word
and it bears no fruit.
But the seed sown on rich soil
is the one who hears the word and understands it,
who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.”
We think because we check off the box of attending church, we are justified.
Today, once again the message of the sower is back.
It seems, Jesus and Mother Church are trying to get a message across.
If you attend Mass, you will hear a reading of scripture from the Old Testament, the New Testament and One of the Gospels. Then, you will hear a homily – sermon – on those scriptures.
If, you are the hard path, you will leave unfazed. If you are the rocky path, you may hear it and think about it for the drive home. If you are the thorny ground, you hear it and keep it until the first impediments appear in your journey.
But, if you are the good soil, you will hear and burst forth with much fruit. You will share the message. You will become involved in ministry. You will become the food for those dying for sustenance in this world of darkness.
Be the good soil. Produce one hundred, or sixty or thirtyfold.
Just produce.
At least that’s what I heard Him say…
