Gospel – 7/27/20 – Matthew 13:31-35
Jesus proposed a parable to the crowds.
“The Kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed
that a person took and sowed in a field.
It is the smallest of all the seeds,
yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants.
It becomes a large bush,
and the ‘birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.’”
He spoke to them another parable.
“The Kingdom of heaven is like yeast
that a woman took and mixed with three measures of wheat flour
until the whole batch was leavened.”
All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables.
He spoke to them only in parables,
to fulfill what had been said through the prophet:
I will open my mouth in parables,
I will announce what has lain hidden from the foundation
of the world.
We keep waiting for something huge to happen. Something that will convince the World of the existence of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Today’s World requires great examples of anything for the people to believe.
It truly is sad. We have been given so many great miracles – birth, life saving surgeries, life extending medicines.
Yet, are too different from the Pharisees, demanding proof?
As Elijah learned at the cave, it isn’t God in the big stuff – winds, fires, earthquakes – it is God in the little things – the still, small breeze. But we don’t want the quiet. We want the big noisy reveal, and we want it now.
God doesn’t want to be showy. He’s fine with ministry done as his son did it. Starting very small, one man – a mustard seed – and seeing it grow organically to become something like Christianity.
Be the mustard seed, be the yeast. It just takes one.
Then, watch it grow.
