Gospel – 8/21/20 – Matthew 22:34-40

When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees,
they gathered together, and one of them,
a scholar of the law, tested him by asking,
“Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?”
He said to him,
“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart,
with all your soul, and with all your mind.
This is the greatest and the first commandment.
The second is like it:
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

In all things, love of God supersedes all things.

Jesus feels he needs to say this because he knows how humanity is drawn to earthly things. Possessions for some. Love for our families may be what turns us from God. So he speaks very succinctly, God comes first in everything we do – with what our heart desires, our souls completion and in our thoughts and desires in our minds.

But very quickly, he adds that we must love our neighbors – as much as we love ourselves. And we have a tendency to love ourselves very much.

So, when the time comes – to sacrifice ourselves for others – we must sacrifice.

Knowing that our love for God will be reciprocated.

At least that’s what I heard Him say…
