Gospel – 5/26/20
Jesus said,
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites.
You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside,
but inside are full of dead men’s bones and every kind of filth.
Even so, on the outside you appear righteous,
but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing.“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites.
You build the tombs of the prophets
and adorn the memorials of the righteous,
and you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors,
we would not have joined them in shedding the prophets’ blood.’
Thus you bear witness against yourselves
that you are the children of those who murdered the prophets;
now fill up what your ancestors measured out!”
As I read this Gospel today, I’m reminded of the false smiles of people who don’t really care about others but feel the need to put forth a false image of who they truly are on the inside.
I think we all have a bit of this to be sorrowful of in our lives. We do things because we want people to think well of us. But, what difference does it make if it isn’t who we truly are?
We come to worship false idols – ourselves. We prop ourselves up with superficial deeds, all the while feeling disgusted with what we are doing.
It’s why Jesus said to love God first and then others as we love ourselves.
How difficult that is when we love ourselves more than God?
At least that’s what I heard Him say…
