Gospel – January 24, 2020 – Mark 3:13-19

Jesus went up the mountain and summoned those whom he wanted
and they came to him.
He appointed Twelve, whom he also named Apostles,
that they might be with him
and he might send them forth to preach
and to have authority to drive out demons:
He appointed the Twelve:
Simon, whom he named Peter;
James, son of Zebedee,
and John the brother of James, whom he named Boanerges,
that is, sons of thunder;
Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew,
Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus;
Thaddeus, Simon the Cananean,
and Judas Iscariot who betrayed him.

I think the most important take away here is Jesus calls these men. Notice there are no well known or powerful. He names 12 as apostles. There were 12 tribes of Israel.

None of those men were of note. None of them were alike. Only a few knew each other – Simon and Andrew, James and John- who were brothers and also the first called as we will hear Sunday.

Yet Jesus saw something in these men – yes even Judas- that he gave them each power over demons and the gift of preaching.

And who were they again? Everyday people – you and me.

What mission is he calling you to? Don’t look at yourself through your eyes – or your brothers and sisters. Look at your yourself with the eyes of Jesus.

You have no idea of what you are capable.

At least that’s what I heard Him say…
