Gospel – January 30, 2020 – Mark 4:21-25

Jesus said to his disciples,
“Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket
or under a bed,
and not to be placed on a lampstand?
For there is nothing hidden except to be made visible;
nothing is secret except to come to light.
Anyone who has ears to hear ought to hear.”
He also told them, “Take care what you hear.
The measure with which you measure will be measured out to you,
and still more will be given to you.
To the one who has, more will be given;
from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”

This last weekend we heard that Jesus began to preach on Isaiah that “those who lived in darkness of death had seen a great light.”

He is the great light and he did not come to be hidden under the rule of the Jewish leaders or Rome. They would try to silence – dim or hide – his light. But Jesus and his teaching weren’t meant to be confined. “For there is nothing hidden except to be made visible;
nothing is secret except to come to light.”

Then he speaks a warning, as he often does, about what the Apostles’ future holds. They will be placed in positions of deciding others spiritual worthiness – “whatever you hold bound here, will be held bound in Heaven” and shaking the sand from their sandals as they leave a village that didn’t welcome the Gospels – but that means they will be measured by the same scales.

But they get the word of God from the Word of God. So they get more and those whose ears are hearing them preach the Gospels and believing will continue to be given ”more”.

But woe to those with closed ears for what knowledge (of the Kingdom) they have and do not share will be lost to them.

At least that’s what I heard Him say…
