Gospel – February 19, 2020 – Mark 8:222-26

When Jesus and his disciples arrived at Bethsaida,
people brought to him a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him.
He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village.
Putting spittle on his eyes he laid his hands on the man and asked,
“Do you see anything?”
Looking up the man replied, “I see people looking like trees and walking.”
Then he laid hands on the man’s eyes a second time and he saw clearly;
his sight was restored and he could see everything distinctly.
Then he sent him home and said, “Do not even go into the village.”

We have a God who heals with touch. He takes this man and leads him away. He laid hands on him after rubbing spittle on his eyes.

He cares about us. He asks the man, “Do you see anything?” The answer was that he didn’t see clearly. Jesus didn’t throw up his hands and walk away – he stayed with him until he could see clearly.

Yesterday, Jesus basically said to the Pharisees he wasn’t there to put on a show for them. He had done enough in their midst.

Today, he lovingly leads a man to the outskirts of town to heal him – once more avoiding a show of his power. He then tells the man to go home but not through the town – no show.

He doesn’t need everyone’s adulation – he does Jesus stuff because he loves us – through touch and through presence.

At least that’s what I heard Him say…
