Gospel – March 18, 2020 – Matthew 5:17-19

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.
I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.
Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away,
not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter
will pass from the law,
until all things have taken place.
Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments
and teaches others to do so
will be called least in the Kingdom of heaven.
But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments
will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.”

If you’re looking to get a reprieve from your responsibility to obey the laws given to Abraham and Moses – don’t read this Gospel. Jesus tells the people that’s not why he’s here. More so, he’s here to clarify the law.

He recognizes the need for rules in a society. But he recognizes also, that laws can be read to say something they weren’t meant to say. That with power laws can be bent to the benefit of the powerful.

As I watch this country and what is happening – the politics, the financial realm and any of the halls of power – I see Jesus shake his head.

Have we learned nothing?

At least that’s what I heard Him say…
